NTUC 'confident' companies will agree to extend re-employment age ceiling

SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) on Wednesday (Oct 1) said it is confident that “hundreds of companies” will agree to extend the re-employment age ceiling from 65 to 67.

The move is aimed at recognising older workers who still actively contribute to the economy.

NTUC’s deputy secretary-general, Mr Heng Chee How, said: “I would say that within the next year or two, I will be quite confident that 500 or more firms will agree, and eventually our aim is certainly to get the whole unionised sector to be a good example.

“We will then use this as encouragement to our tripartite partners to show that it can be done, it is being done, there is no risk to actually going along and to take the next step.”

He made the comments on the sidelines of a dinner held for about 200 older workers. It is part of an initiative to encourage unionised companies to appreciate their older workers.
