Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry named 26 companies recognizing their increased efforts in making their workplace morewomen-friendly in 2013. The companies chosen were listed in the “Nadeshiko” brand that supports women by actively hiring them and providing adequate child-rearing support.
The recognition was done in collaboration with the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and is part of the Abe’s administration to increase by 30% the number of females working in leadership positions by 2020. It also aims to take advantage of the number of employed women in boosting the nation’s economic growth. Last year’s 17 companies are now 26, with some from 2012 still included in the 2013 list for the second consecutive time. Among those recognized this year are Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., Hitachi Ltd., Takeda Pharmaceutical, and Bridgestone. Toray Industries, Nissan Motor Co. and KDDI are on the list for two successive years already.
The Nadeshiko brand, an awards-recognition in its second year, is based on different criteria. One factor is the proportion of women in board or managerial positions, and the number of men filing for child-care leave in a company. A Keio University Professor named Yoshio Higuchi believes that it takes around three to five years since the hiring and promotion of a woman for revenue increase to happen. However, The Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry said that companies whose female employees constitute around 20-30% of its workforce earn around 1% higher profit margins than those that only have under 10% in its company.
