SINGAPORE – The Singapore society needs to place greater emphasis on professional skills, where students are subsequently recognised for their performance and efforts at the workplace, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat today (June 24) .
Mr Heng, who was speaking at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduation ceremony, reiterated the importance of a skills-based education.
Addressing the 1,400 attendees, he said: “Each of you need to develop the flexibility to adapt, to learn new skills and explore career possibilities. We must all learn new skills throughout our life time to stay relevant.”
He added that many will eventually discover that investing in further education has to make sense for one’s career and this discovery will only come after joining the workforce.
“You must discover it yourself, through personal and professional development,” said Mr Heng. “Take the time to explore the world of work and continue learning on the job and even beyond.”
