SINGAPORE — Companies can offer more employement opportunities to people with special needs, which will open up doors for them to fully participate fully in the community, said Social and Family Development Minister Chan Chun Sing at the opening of a new Starbucks store employing six staff members with autism.

Ms Denise Phua, president of Autism Resource Centre and an MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC, said that while it would not be difficult to find employers willing to accept people with special needs due to the tight labour market, the challenge would be to find an employer who is willing to go the extra mile to modify work systems and provide ongoing support.

Mr Chan added that he hoped to see a kind of spirit where employers would tweak their work processes in order to employ them not out of pity, but to see people with special needs as partners worthy in their own right to be able to contribute meaningfully to the company.
