A foreign worker was found dead after a fall from a height at the construction site for the Housing and Development Board’s (HDB) Eastcreek @ Canberra project in Canberra Street.

Official statement from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the victim, a 44-year old Chinese national, was installing a pre-cast column on the 13th floor of the building when he fell over the edge last Saturday (May 5). When the accident occurred at around 8.30pm, the man was reportedly not wearing a safety harness that would lead to fatal death after the fall.

After receiving call for assistance, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) came to the site and confirmed that the foreign worker was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. The police also said that the accident will be investigated as an ‘unnatural death’.

Regarding the investigation, the MOM has ordered Expand Construction as the main contractor for the construction project to stop all work related to the installation of precast components, Straits Times reports.

It is known that the worker was an employee of Dong Zhou Engineering, a sub-contractor of TSF Construction, which in turn is a sub-contractor for the building work.

In response, TSF Construction expressed regrets that the accident happened while stating that it will emphasise even more on improving the safety of its sub-contractors. It added that the company already conducts safety training for all its workers.

Expand Construction and Dong Zhou Engineering could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, the HDB said it was unable to release further details about the accident owing to an MOM investigation.

This is the second reported fatal workplace accident in the area this month. A 44-year old Indian construction worker was also killed after a fall at a worksite in Gambas on May 1.
