[JAKARTA] Thousands of workers gathered at a main traffic circle in the Indonesian capital yesterday morning to mark International Workers’ Day and rally for higher wages and better conditions.

Police estimated that around 50,000 workers representing various organisations from Jakarta and the surrounding areas took to the streets in the morning to march from the traffic circle to the State Palace and a stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

According to the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry, there are six union confederations, 92 federations and more than 11,800 company-level unions that boast 3.4 million members in Indonesia.

The rally’s main agenda was a 30 per cent regional minimum wage increase for 2015, The Jakarta Globe reported.
