Some employees from the Yahoo branch in Singapore have been informed that they were being laid off on Thursday (Feb 18), confirmed a company spokesperson.
This comes after the web pioneer’s move to revamp its core Internet business, which includes cutting its workforce.
In response to media queries by Channel NewsAsia, a spokesperson from Yahoo Asia Pacific said that in early February, Yahoo had “shared a plan for the future, (and) with this new plan came some very difficult decisions and changes to our business”.
“As a result of these changes some jobs have been eliminated and those employees were notified today (Thursday),” said the spokesperson. “We thank those employees for their outstanding service to Yahoo and will treat these employees with the respect and fairness they deserve.”
The company declined to disclose the number of employees who were laid off, but said that operations in Singapore will continue and that the country “remains an important market for Yahoo”.
In the US, Yahoo announced on Feb 3 that it would consider “strategic alternatives” for its core Internet business and cut about 15 per cent of its workforce. Earlier in the week, it announced that it would lay off 107 employees by Apr 11.
On Wednesday, they announced it would cut more than 300 jobs by Apr 18, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. They also announced that some digital magazines will be shut.
