Labour movement welcomes SkillsFuture initiatives: Lim Swee Say

SINGAPORE: The labour movement welcomes the newly announced SkillsFuture initiatives as they strengthen the hard and soft skills of workers ensuring they remain employable in the future, said the Secretary-General of NTUC on Saturday (Feb 28).

Speaking on the sidelines of the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan’s Chinese New Year get-together, Mr Lim Swee Say, who is also the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, said he hopes this holistic approach to SkillsFuture training can also help Singaporeans become better engaged and happier workers.

Under the Earn and Learn scheme, the union will also reach out to students and new job entrants from the ITEs, polytechnics and universities.

Mr Lim said it would help job entrants build good careers in promising sectors and a stronger Singaporean core in key sectors of the economy.

“On the one hand, we can encourage new job entrants to move into these sectors through Earn and Learn. At the same time, through economic restructuring job redesign, we try to enhance the quality and attractiveness of these jobs, so that at the end of the day, we can achieve both our objectives of economic restructuring, and at the same time optimising our manpower,” he added.
