SINGAPORE: The North East Community Development Council (CDC) organised the first recruitment event in Sengkang on Saturday (Mar 21) at Rivervale Plaza, targeting residents living in the Pasir-Ris Punggol district for jobs in the neighbourhood.

Supported by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), the event aims to help small business owners fill about 400 job vacancies in the district. Such jobs are particularly suited to those seeking flexible work hours, as well as mature workers, North East CDC said.

The CDC said filling up vacancies have not been easy for these merchants, as job-seekers are often unaware of nearby job opportunities, while putting up employment advertisements could also be too expensive for smaller merchants.

Said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who visited the event on Saturday: “Some of them say that they’ve gone into a different phase of life. They’re looking for something a little closer to home, which gives them a better work-life balance as well.”
