SINGAPORE: To deal with manpower shortage, food and beverage (F&B) and hospitality industries intend to attract National Servicemen who are nearing their Operationally Ready Date (ORD).

This suggestion was raised at the preview of the Food&HotelAsia2014 International Conference (FHA2014) on Tuesday.

Some manpower-saving devices will also be displayed at the event.

One hotel has set up a self-service kiosk and a 24-hour self-service gourmet coffee and wine dispenser to get round its manpower issues.

Industry players said resignation rate for F&B industries in Singapore in 2012 was 4.6 per cent per month — double that of the average resignation rate of 2.3 per cent in the service industry.

They suggested that the F&B industry should attract Singaporeans who are working in F&B and hospitality industries overseas back to Singapore to act as mentors to new entrants in the industry.

“I think ultimately, their home is still… Singapore. So how can we bring in more Singaporean expertise that have done so well overseas and to (add) value… back to the Singapore industry,” said Cheong Hai Poh, president of the Food and Beverage Manager’s Association.

FHA2014 will be held from April 8-11, taking up all 10 halls of Singapore Expo.
