Six major electronics makers including Hitachi Ltd. and Panasonic Corp. are set to raise their pay scales by ¥1,000 to ¥2,000 at this spring’s labor-management wage talks, sources said Wednesday.
The labor unions at the six companies, which are under the umbrella of the Japanese Electrical Electronic & Information Union, made a unified demand to increase basic wages by ¥4,000 but the firms are unlikely to agree to fully meet the demand due to differences in their earnings recovery, the sources said.
Amid uncertainties over emerging economies, the six companies, which also include Toshiba Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Fujitsu Ltd. and NEC Corp., are reluctant to see large pay scale hikes as they do not wish to push up fixed costs in the medium to long term.
The companies are aiming to raise pay scales by more than ¥1,000, the level of the last hike, implemented in 2008.
The unions at Panasonic, Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric also demanded a higher bonus than last year.
Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC have adopted systems to raise bonuses in accordance with their performance.
