Recruiting is an intriguing job with not only a busy schedule and demanding tasks but also fun and rewarding experiences. Being a recruiter can open doors for many opportunities such as sharpening communication and organisational skills while earning a hefty paycheck. Even better, at the end of the day, you walk out of the office door knowing that you have made a difference in someone’s life. 

The problem is, however, you who have worked as a recruiter for years could feel severe burnout and fatigue because of your schedule of meeting clients and talents, assisting them and advising the same things over and over again. Sometimes, you might also receive unpleasant responses and face tough challenges that make you think your day is worthless. When this happens more often than ever, do you want to change your career navigation and move on from the recruiting industry?

If the answer is yes, without more ado, here are alternate careers you can take into consideration. 

1 – Go back to your earlier job

What were your jobs before becoming a recruiter? Maybe you were a teacher or working in a non-government organisation. This could be a good opportunity for you to come back to your previous occupation when you feel enough with your life as a recruiter. Perhaps, by going back to your earlier career, you can find a new passion and meaning in your life. 

2 – Think about your dream career 

Why not spare time to think about your true career goals before migrating from the recruitment industry? Try asking yourself these questions: 

  • What do you really want to achieve in life? Do you want to be a chef and start your own restaurant? Do you want to be an entrepreneur? Do you want to travel and be your own boss? Do you wish to work while spending more time with family? 
  • What kind of company do you wish to work for? A company with more perks? A company that can give financial safety? A company with a good work-life balance? Or perhaps, a company where you are the boss?  

Once you know your wants in life, you will likely find a passion for the job. Hence, your career migration will likely to succeed. 

3 – Project management career 

As a recruiter, you have great potential in organisation skills that make it good for you to work in sales. When thinking about sales, being a project management officer could be a good choice. According to Neeru Jain, companies will always initiate projects to increase revenue, minimise cost, and increase the economy. That said, a career in project management is on demand. Additionally, you can transfer all your recruiting knowledge and skills to cultivate and be the project management officer of choice.

4 – Achieve more by being part of a corporate  

If you are an agency recruiter, you might want to consider going into the corporate recruiting world. For some people, working for a large company is much more interesting because it helps us learn how large companies function. You also have a chance to form strong ties with potential executive groups such as CEOs or businesspeople. Working with a large company will also unlock the opportunity to move to other functions in HR as well. 

Another option, you can apply for an HR job in outplacement department. This department is different from being a recruiter as your number one duty is to fire people – not hire them. 

5 – Working as a real estate broker  

If you are interested in investing, you should try this one – and your transferable skills as a recruiter will help you a lot. As a real estate broker, you need to be sourcing for properties. Then, searching for tenants and calling potential buyers. Investing in real estate is a lot easier because you have something tangible that people can see with their eyes, an apartment or a house. 

6 – Career coach or career adviser 

Another job to consider is to be a career coach or career adviser. You know a lot about the business world as you deal with many different clients who expect different goals. Hence, being a career coach will probably help you get out of your routine of being a recruiter all the time. 

7 – Writer 

Why a writer? Writing is one of the most agreeable forms to help share knowledge as well as the most effective way to document your thoughts. You can write anything of your choice. For instance, if you like making fictions, you can start a career as a novelist; or if you like helping new recruiters, you can start a blog and publish tips and tricks of becoming a credible recruiter. 

Write, share your story, and build up your portfolio. After everything you have encountered as a recruiter, something good will happen.
