Construction Firm in Singapore Fined $250,000 for Safety Lapses that Resulted in Worker’s DeathManagement NEWS Productivity Resource July 12, 2017
Construction firm Or Kim Peow Contractors has been convicted and fined $250,000 for safety lapses that lead worker’s death. In an accident that happened on Sept 22 2015, four workers falling 6.4m to the ground when they were standing on under the Yio Chu Kang flyover.
One worker from India was reportedly died, while three others from India and Bangladesh were injured.
The penalty was also charged for Victor Tan Kok Peng, the company’s safety coordinator and site supervisor. Fined $12,000 under the Workplace Health and Safety Act, he was charged for performing a negligent act, said the Ministry of Manpower on Tuesday (July 11). From the investigations, Peng was found guilty for assigning workers who were not trained and briefed adequately to perform the duty.
The construction firm was engaged in structural, piping, and finishing flyover. When the accident occurred, the four workers were installing a reinforcement system to the underside of the flyover, Straits Times reports.
Investigations found that the company never hired trained scaffold erectors to assemble the standing platform. They also assigned the workers without immediate supervision of a scaffold supervisor. Additionally, apparently there were no warning signs or labels that state about the maximum permissible load of the working platform at its access point.
Based on these findings, Mr Chan Yew Kwong, MOM’s director of occupational safety and health inspectorate stated that MOM will not hesitate to take punitive actions on companies and individuals that fail to take workplace safety seriously.
