It is no secret that asking for pay raise from often comes as a stressful and daunting experience. As awkward as it might be, the moment you confront your boss could be potentially harmful for your career if you fail to do it the right way. If you are not careful in uttering your intention, you will bear the risk of humiliating yourself and even revealing your flaws instead of strengths. On the other hand, with all the efforts you put in your work, you know you deserve more than what you receive now.

What should you do, then?

In today’s economic downturn where jobs are hard to find, rather than risking their career by asking for more money, many employees would go with whatever the employer offer to them. The good news is, you do not have to wait until your next annual performance review to get salary raise, nor do you have to find a new job that offers higher pay to make ends meet. Even better, there are couple ways where you can get better compensation without asking for it.

As the famous technique says, “Show, don’t tell.” The secrets to compensating right is to simply prove your worth instead of talking about it. All you have to do is to win your boss’ heart by doing your best and showing him that you can meet the company’s expectations. When you are able to outperform at your job, this will naturally attract your employer’s attention. And even if company’s current budget makes it impossible to give you a raise, there are good chances that you will be in the first line to get it when things are getting better.

Here are four strategies you can do to get compensation you deserve:

  1. Make yourself irreplaceable

Being irreplaceable means that your employer understands your crucial contribution for the organisation. That being said, rather than risking to lose you, they will be willing to pay whatever you ask for. If you want to make yourself an exceptional employee, you have to exceed people’s expectations while showing relentless productivity and strong commitment.

  1. Hone your skills

Life-long education and continuous training on your field will make you an expert in the industry. When you become an expert, your company will give you better compensation to keep you stay. Instead of waiting for your boss to provide you workshops or courses, you should pursue training by yourself and expand your skillsets.

  1. Go volunteer and be proactive

When nobody wants to take up certain project, it is time for you to step up and grab the opportunity. Being a volunteer will make you stand out in front on your employer’s eyes. Therefore, if none would organise the company’s annual charity event, you could be proactive and volunteer to run the program.

  1. Please your boss

This does not mean that you should be a yes-person or even a crawler. Instead, you should know how to please your boss in positive ways. For example, when you are successful in completing particular project, you can give your boss credit for your achievement by showing your gratitude for their guidance.
